Week 4.

Our final question was that:
‘Who is making money out of Global warming?’

As a result of that question we have some of our brainstorming.
I think those of answers are a general tendency today.

-Company’s strategy
-Politician’s pledge
-Country’s policy
-Filmmaker’s material
-…

: Use environmental issue as their strategy so appeal to the public and advertise them through different media.

What we discussed was that how they make money and how we going to present it effectively.

I haven’t found any of examples yet but have some research
(www.refrigerantsnaturally.com), which is reaction of Coca-Cola Company on global warming.

* Coca-Cola and Refrigeration
1. The Coca-Cola system, including bottler partners, has 9 million coolers and vending machines in the marketplace, which primarily use hydro fluorocarbons (Huffs) as refrigerants and in insulation foams. Huffs are “greenhouse” gasses that have potential to increase global warming.
2. The Coca-Cola Company is committed to moving to HFC-free technologies where cost-efficient alternatives are commercially available. This applies to both refrigeration gases and insulation foam.
The company has also committed that by 2010; new equipment purchased will be between 40% and 50% more energy efficient than the machines used in 2000.

* Progress to Date
1. To reach the commitment goals Coca-Cola created an internal development program and following a four-year research and development phase identified CO2-based refrigeration as the best option for the company’s global commercial refrigeration needs.
2. The Coca-Cola Company has invested $10 million so far in research and development and its suppliers and technology partners have invested more than double that sum.
Field tests of prototype coolers have taken place in Spain, Japan, Greece and Australia. The company in 2005 is planning large field trials of commercial-design units in Germany, Sweden, Norway, Spain and Italy.

* Impact of Coca-Cola Initiatives
1. The company estimates that the climate-friendly technologies that will be implemented by 2010 will emit (directly and indirectly) 700,000 tons less greenhouse gases that would otherwise have been emitted by continuing to use existing refrigeration technology.
That is the equivalent of removing 150,000 cars from the road or planting 200,000 trees to remove greenhouse gasses from the environment.

Last week, I also found some interesting book called Guardians Of Power, which is about myth of the liberal media.
There was a lot of different view from journalism that how it says about some issue like war and climate change. I think this book tells some truth we didn’t know that before and make us re think about our dependency for media.

Week 3.

Which question is really interesting for us?

I think most important thing before we decide make a decision is answering the question. Then it would be easier way to do this work.

So in this week, we had another discussion and had to arrange our questions from last week again.
Also, to make a choice, we had to understand each one’s opinions clearly.
We have narrowed all questions down to two questions so far, which is general and specific. However what I really was confusing is whether our question needs to include answer from first question (why it taken so long..?) or not. It was not hard to make the question we really interested with, but the problem was how we going to make it work with brief.
While we’re having discussion, we made some process of our question.

1-climate change appears
2-today: reports by developed media in the world
(Past: reports by limited media)
3-spreads widely
4-becomes the global issue
5-people start to recognize
6-changes people’s behaviors and perception
7-how?

As our plan, we will try to focus on how people change their behaviors when they are aware of global issue by media because the more they see and listen that kind of issue, the more they change. There will be different way of changing in different positions such as production and consumption. So we will be able to focus on some position like international company.

Question
What is the world doing?
– What are the people doing? (Policy/control)
– What is the media doing?
-What are companies doing? (International/local):
==>Do they use ‘Global warming’ issue as there one of the marketing strategies by media?

Week 2.

Last week, we made our group and had a discussion about global warming. Although it was first time to talk and we’re quite new to such work,
It was nice try to share different onions.

*Question

-Does media help to reduce global warming problem?

-How is media relevant to reduce global warming?

-If media affects the global warming, what’s different between past and today’s media?

-What kind of media can work?

-How does it control the global warming?

-Does media control human act as well?

-If media can help to control it, does it affect another social issue?

Though we haven’t got any answer from all questions, we are still trying to expand our question more to understand relationship between global warming and media.

In this week, I tried to find different sources to know about global warming. I was looking for some article from new papers and magazines but it was hard unless checking the past issues.

I think social issue like global warming is tends to be forgotten by people while it is easy to be global issue because media enables people to pay attention to another issue easily. It seems like circle of people’s tendency.
For example, if one day climate change was reported by Media, it would helps to remind people of global warming in short time with some facts that how it is dangerous today and how people going to be affected by it. So they would change the people’s behavior. However it might not last long.

I found some research from a magazine called HABITAT AUSTRALIA. (Jan. 2007)

‘These are the stunning results of a new survey commissioned by the UK newspaper, the financial Times. According to survey, 86 per cent of people believe humans are responsible for global warming and 45 per cent saw climate change as a threat to them and their families within lifetimes. 68 per cent said they would support restrictions on their behavior and their purchases to reduce this threat’

Week 1.

Unfortunately, my lap top was stolen last week by burglar so my all work is gone with my efforts. All my design works.. Art works..T-T
I felt like I’m stuck in somewhere and lose my best friend.. It is undeniable fact that it’s really hard to survive at least one day without computer.

First week, actually I felt get confused because the things we have to do in this semester.
I’m still waiting for the book ‘cradle to cradle’.

The problem -> the challenge

Today, Global warming becoming major issue all over the world but the challenge is that why has it taken so long for this awareness to percolate through to the general public.

-I think It was already the issue when people found it first but it was so theoretical.There are many possibilities that make people awake from ignorance.Media can be one of the ways which could help it. This issue will be required to many of research.

I think this Media project will help to find the way we communicate between research and design.
